Our turning and machining department covers 3, 4 and 5-axis milling plus lathe work with live tooling. It supports two kinds of work: precision machined components for customers, and the tooling and fixtures our own automation group needs.

That second use is why the department earns its keep on integration projects. When a robotic cell needs an end-of-arm tool changed mid-commissioning, we machine the new one the same day on the 5-axis instead of waiting on an outside shop.

Clear, complete drawings matter here more than anywhere else in the building — call out every critical dimension, tolerance and finish so nothing has to be assumed.

What is your machining capacity?

3-axis and 4-axis milling to 50 x 22 inches, 5-axis milling to 25 x 18 x 16 inches, and turning with live tooling to 15 inch diameter by 32.5 inch length.

What tolerance do you hold on machined parts?

Plus or minus 0.020 inch on any part submitted without a drawing. Tighter tolerances, threads, press or slip fits and surface finishes must be called out on a 2D drawing, and tighter callouts add cost.

What should I send for a machining quote?

The 3D model plus a 2D drawing in PDF with every critical dimension, tolerance and finish called out. Anything left unstated has to be assumed, and assumptions cost time in planning.

Do you machine aerospace and defense parts?

Yes. CalWest is AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certified and ITAR registered, and the machining department builds the end-of-arm tooling and fixtures for our own robotic cells.
